Champagne

The Champagne wine region (archaic English: Champany) is a historic province within the Champagne administrative province in the northeast of France. The area is best known for the production of the sparkling white wine that bears the region’s name. EU law and the laws of most countries reserve the term “Champagne” exclusively for wines that come from this region located about 100 miles (160 km) east of Paris.

For decades now the wine drinking world has been conditioned into believing that great Champagne is exclusively produced by big-name companies with marketing budgets bigger than their vineyard investment and must froth and bubble like an antacid tablet. How the wheels have turned in the last couple of years with the recognition of small grower Champagne. In much the same way the holy grail of Pinot Noir can only be achieved in that variety’s homeland by the finest growers of Burgundy, the same can be said about Champagne.
