Southern Rhone

The Rhône is generally divided into two sub-regions with distinct vinicultural traditions, the Northern Rhône (referred to in French as Rhône septentrional) and the Southern Rhône (in French Rhône méridional). The northern sub-region produces red wines from the Syrah grape, sometimes blended with white wine grapes, and white wines from Viognier grapes.

Domaine de la Mordorée

The winemaker at the ecologically farmed Domaine de la Mordorée is 40 year old Christophe Delorme who has created an enormous reputation for his wines since creating the Domaine in 1986. These are modern styled Rhône’s in the best sense of the phrase, combining the use of French and some Russian oak with first class juice.

Nick Thompson moved from his native England twenty years ago to study oenology in France where he met his wife Sabine (who is also an oenologist). Nick has been making wine in the southern Rhone for more than fifteen years and has become one of the stars of the region consistently producing value blends of luscious concentration.

Domaine De Mourchon

Séguret is a beautiful hillside village situated just east of the Dentelles de Montmirail in the Southern Rhône Valley. Domaine De Mourchon is set in the hills behind Séguret at an altitude of 350 metres and the vineyards are divided into a series of hillside parcels.

Since the 17th century Domaine des Richards, which takes its name from the Grandmother’s side of the current owners, is situated in the heart of the Vaucluse department. They are fine producers of Côtes-du-Rhône rouge, blanc and rosé, however it is the Muscat Beaumes de Venise and Vacqueyras for which they are famous.

Founded in 1854 with 18 hectares under vine planted to Grenache (80%) Syrah (15%) and Mourvedre (5%) proprietor Dominique Ay keeps things very simple at Gigondas’ finest address – one red and one Rosé. The Raspail-Ay Gigondas reflects the appellation’s characteristics faithfully in an elegantly robust style which needs four or so years for the tannins to meld with the wine.

Roger Sabon
Southern Rhone, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Long regarded as a reference point for this magnificent appellation of world renown, Roger Sabon is a great source of traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape where the expression of fruit and terroir is everything and oak is treated with caution. Sabon makes wines of concentration, flesh and finesse utilising 70 year old foudrés for elevage and second use barriques.
