(Hubert) Lignier Père & Fils
Burgundy, Morey-St-Denis
Wine Maker: Hubert Lignier

One of Burgundy’s finest addresses has changed its name. Since the untimely death of my good friend Romain Lignier in October 2004, Hubert Lignier’s retirement plans have been dissolved.

Romain’s brother Laurent recently joined his father in the business in order to secure the ongoing survival of this first division producer which has been strangled by the petulance of a miss-guided relative.

The Lignier wines are profound, deep and classy red Burgundies with great complexity and structure whilst remaining natural, ethereal and very pure.

'The end result [Chez Hubert Lignier] is full, rich, concentrated and succulent.' Clive Coates MW

Wine Available
2006 Chambolle-Musigny
'An expressive and ripe red berry fruit nose that is actually quite pretty as there is a background nuance of wet stone that continues onto the rich, round, forward and supple flavors that are delicious if lacking a bit in backend precision as the overall impression is a wine fashioned in an extracted style. 86 points' Burghound

2006 Morey-St-Denis
'Just as elegant and a bit more complex with airy red berry fruit and subtle earth aromas introducing dusty, complex and penetrating middle weight flavors that possess better finishing precision and punch. 87 points' Burghound

2006 Gevrey-Chambertin
'A much more evidently earthy nose complements the red berry fruit, underbrush and slightly sauvage aromas that merges into serious, rich and moderately structured flavors that possess excellent material and complexity. A fine if not truly distinguished villages. 88 points' Burghound

2006 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'La Perrière'
Charming and fragrant fruit, ripe sour cherry merging with red cherry, refined medium bodied, the finish is fine, elegant and persistent.

2006 Morey-St-Denis, 1er Cru 'Les Chaffots'
'A deft touch of wood spice frames somewhat riper yet very fresh aromas of black cherry, jerky and soil tones that are followed by textured, sappy and mouth coating medium-full flavors that possess good energy and verve on the linear and admirably lingering finish where the acidity is a bit more prevalent. (89-91 points' Burghound

2006 Morey-St-Denis, 1er Cru 'Les Blanchards'
Beautifully perfumed, fine but ripe energetic fleshy intensity and structure. A wonderful example of quality and expressive Morey 1er.

2006 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru 'Les Didiers'
From a small parcel near Les St Georges (vers 2 ha.) oaky but classy beautiful ripe and polished fruit, lovely complexity (50 yo vines) maraschino. The palate displays fine soft and fleshy pinot fruit great length.

2006 Clos de la Roche, Grand Cru
'(from a .79 ha parcel of 35 to 45 year old vines located in Monts Luisants). Here too there is a mildly macerated nose but with better overall complexity as the layering is impressive and it carries over to the rich, full and very serious flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration and focused power that is underpinned by very firm tannins that are bigger and slightly more rustic than those of the Charmes but there is also more buffering material. 91 points' Burghound

2006 Charmes Chambertin, Grand Cru
'(from a tiny .09 ha parcel of vines in Charmes proper). A macerated yet not inelegant nose that is fresh and expressive with mostly red berry fruit aromas preceding textured, delicious and admirably complex middle weight flavors where the supporting tannins are well integrated and dusty, all wrapped in a mouth coating, precise and solidly persistent finish. 90 points' Burghound
