Wine Maker: Pierre Morey

Fifty-eight year old Pierre Morey is one of the great white wine masters of the world. His Domaine originates (1971) from that of his father in 1930, now the Domaine boasts landholdings in Burgundy’s most noble vineyards which he has farmed bio-dynamically since 1997.

The Morey Blanc business is the marketing and negociant arm, so named by the surnames of Pierre Morey and his wife Christiane Blanc. The style and quality of the wines are a synthesis of the nervous complexity and funk of a Leflaive that share similar underlying richness; and the Morey wines have the capacity to age very gracefully indeed.

In 1989 Pierre Morey was appointed wine maker at Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet, a position he will hold until the end of 2008.

'For those who enjoy serious, classically styled, ultra pure white Burgundy that is expressly intended to age, these are wines that deserve your attention as each wine has its original, and individual, character.' Allen Meadows, Burghound

Wine Available
2006 Pierre Morey Bourgogne blanc
'(50% in steel and 50% in wood). Morey virtually always excels with this wine and 2006 is no different as it delivers excellent quality for its level. A reserved and relatively tight nose of citrus and earth notes where the citrus can also be found on the round, rich and generous middle weight flavors that culminate in a vibrant and persistent finish. Definitely worth a look and this would be a great choice for a daily drinker. (85-87)/2010+' Burghound

2006 Pierre Morey Meursault
'(from Le Pellans and Les Forges). Moderate reduction renders the nose difficult to read but the mediumbodied flavors possess a silky mouth feel and possess an attractive underlying minerality that runs the length of the complex, balanced and solidly long finish. (87-89)/2011+' Burghound

2006 Pierre Morey Meursault 'Les Tessons' *sold out*
'Like the Bourgogne, Morey rarely misses with this wine and though the nose is difficult to read due to the presence of more than a little reduction, the detailed and racy flavors are an indisputable step up in richness and depth, particularly the latter while finishing with verve and excellent underlying material. Lovely. (88-91)/2011+' Burghound

2006 Pierre Morey Meursault 1er Cru 'Perrieres'
'Again, as one would reasonably expect, this is more elegant still with a pure and refined nose of white flower, wet stone, fennel and a hint of honeysuckle that is also picked up by the citrusy, sweet and marvelously intense flavors that possess a bit more volume than usual. A very classy effort that will age well. (91-93)/2012+' Burghound

2006 Pierre Morey Batard-Montrachet, Grand Cru *sold out*
'(from a .48 ha parcel of Puligny vines that sit on the Chassagne border abutting Montrachet). Here the nose is very ripe, indeed to the point of being exotic with peach, apricot, mango and pineapple aromas preceding exceptionally rich, full and obviously well-muscled big-bodied flavors that culminate in an explosive and hugely long finish. This is atypical compared to what Morey usually does with his Bâtard but it is undeniably impressive. (91-94)/2012+' Burghound

2005 Morey Blanc Saint Aubin 1er Cru 'Les Combes'
'The best of these three St. Aubin 1ers as it’s the most complete wine among them with a discreet touch of oak serving as a backdrop for the citrus, pear and acacia blossom aromas that introduce high energy and mineral-infused flavors that culminate in a linear and detailed finish. Lovely. (88-90)/2009+' Burghound

2006 Morey Blanc Saint Aubin 1er Cru 'Les Combes'
'While not quite as ripe as the 1er, here the nose is notably complex and refined with green fruit and floral aromas that are followed by intense, detailed and minerally middle weight flavors that possess excellent precision, all wrapped in a nicely rich, sappy and persistent linear finish. Very good quality and worth a look. (88-90)/2011+' Burghound

2006 Morey Blanc Meursault 1er Cru 'Boucheres'
'A dense nose of very ripe orchard fruit, including peach, apricot and red apple along with brioche and citrus introduces very rich, sappy and naturally sweet flavors that possess excellent concentration, all wrapped in a finish that trades a bit less complexity for even more length. The material is present for this to add depth with time and the extra length is always an important portent. (89-91)/2011+' Burghound

2006 Morey Blanc Corton-Charlemagne, Grand Cru *sold out*
'(from all 3 communes). An exceptionally fresh and expressive green fruit, stone and subtly wooded nose slides into big-bodied, rich and in contrast to the exuberant nose, brooding flavors that possess obvious muscle and power that continue with real drive and punch to the explosive finish that leaves a wonderful mineral tang. (91-93)/2013+' Bughound
