Wine Maker: Patrice Capitain

In the same family since 1802 Domaine Capitain-Gagnerot is owned and managed by the gypsy-like Patrice Capitain and his well traveled son Pierre who combine a serious Burgundy Domaine with a fun and outgoing love of life. Their wines are an extension of their personalities and the terroirs they farm they do so with a soft hand and natural approach. An elegant touch with the juicy flavor of healthy ripe fruit is front and centre at this little known address; new oak is kept to an absolute minimum, ten per cent in fact.

The vineyards are worked without systemic sprays and the wine making is traditionally Burgundian with minimalist intervention, natural ferments and a light filtration prior to bottling. The Grand Crus are fermented in open-top wooden fermenters, all other cuvees are fermented in concrete vats.

The Capitain-Gagnerot wines are very approachable in their youth due to their elegance and purity of fruit and will further develop over 6 to 10 years depending on the appellation. The presentation and value of these wines is exceptional which is refreshing considering the enormous world wide demand for Burgundy.

Wine Available
2006 Ladoix 1er Cru blanc 'Les Hautes Morottes'
The florals and subtle vanilla spice notes provide for delightful complexity and integration; the full and round ripe stone fruit flavors are delicious, rich and morish finishing with great clarity courtesy of the bright lacy acidity.

2006 Corton Charlemagne, Grand Cru
'(from a .4 ha parcel of vines in both Ladoix and Pernand that average 35 years of age aged in 30% one year old wood and the balance in older wood). Very discreet notes of wood and sulfur are mixed with ripe green apple, citrus and floral aromas that complement the delicious and nicely intense middle weight flavors that offer both fine detail and obvious minerality on the dry and solidly long finish. This is actually quite attractive as there is good depth and the SO2 on the nose is sufficiently subtle that it will be absorbed in time. Lovely. 90 points.' Burghound

2005 Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Charnieres'
Lovely new season cherries, this is bright, elegant and very inviting. The palate is softly textured with lovely ripe round tannins; terrific balance on length. This is ready to drink now and will be delicious over the next few years.
