Alsace

Alsace in the North-West of the France is almost a principality, and one of mostly white varieties.  Separated from Germany by the Rhine River twenty-five kilometres to the East, and from the rest of France by the Vosges mountains on the West.  The vineyards are situated on the Eastern slopes of the Vosges which protect them from the rain.  It is a unique climate – the second driest in France, Alsace is sunny.  Most vineyards are planted on the South, South-West, or South-East facing slopes in order to make the best use of the sun and sunlight. The region is noted for its very fine Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and other varietals including Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, Chasselas and Muscat. Pinot Noir, whilst not planted widely does well in the hands of top growers.
