Domaine de Mourchon
Mourchon, nestled in the picturesque Séguret hills at an altitude of 350 meters, is where a series of hillside parcels make up the vineyard landscape. Founded and constructed in 1997 by Scotsman, Walter McKinlay, the winery itself is a stunning, space-age structure that blends both spectacle and functionality.
The true crown jewel of Mourchon lies in its 35 to 55-year-old vines, which grow in a combination of clay, limestone, and grey sandstone soils. These terroirs impart the signature characteristics of Séguret wines: dark color, spicy fruit, full-bodied richness, and a firm structure, bolstered by powerful, ripe tannins. The wines from these vines are capable of aging gracefully in the cellar for up to a decade.
Grenache is the dominant variety, as is typical of the region, complemented by Syrah, Carignan, and Cinsault. Mourchon’s inaugural vintage was in 1998, and since then, the estate has been committed to hand-harvesting its grapes. There are three main cuvées, each showcasing a specific blend of varietals.
Classified under the French Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) system, the wines of Séguret must meet rigorous standards to guarantee their quality and adherence to tradition, including criteria for yields, terroir, grape varieties, and harvesting practices. To earn the AOP designation, wines undergo both analysis and tasting to ensure they reflect the authentic character of the region.
